Don't Be Afraid: A Page From the Poet's Diary

Those who know me know I am a huge fan of the Temptations. They are my favorite group of all time. And this song selection is one of my favorite ballads of all time. To me, it embodies the essence of love and genuine interest in the one you have set your heart upon. With Richard Street on the lead vocals, blending his golden pipes with the crisp falsetto of Damon Harris and the overall harmony of the group, it is easy to see and hear why this is one my favorite love songs. After listening to it, it will probably be one of yours, too. Street, who I feel is underrated as a singer and is seldom mentioned among the great vocalists, definitely put his soul into this one.

The following is a poem I wrote back in 2010 at work while sitting at my desk. I thought the song would compliment the poem. Leave your comments below and let me know what you think.

                                                       DON'T BE AFRAID

Don't be afraid to open up your love to me; I promise not to abuse it or misuse it.
Don't be afraid to express yourself with a caressing touch or an intimate kiss; I promise not to take advantage of your tender vulnerability...

Don't be afraid to say yes to right now, although your past pain says no; I promise to take your hand and lead you into the presence of joy and laughter, building memories anew...

Don't be afraid of me or the strength of my love; for it is a shelter for you to rest in peacefully; I promise to massage your every thought with the touch of my voice...

Don't be afraid to appear naked before me; for the natural essence of your beauty is a heavenly sight; I promise not to take lustfully, but to give lovingly of the pleasure from my loins...

Don't be afraid to confide in me your deepest secrets; I promise to protect the private parts of your heart...

Don't be afraid to sit alone in my presence; I promise to bring comfort as I gaze into your eyes and expose your soul to the authentic fires of love's passion...

Don't be afraid to allow me to touch the untouched places in you and bring the chill of romantic whispers upon your skin; and as you surrender to my love, your heart will agree that it is good, and you will have allowed yourself to experience the totality of all that I am... Don't Be Afraid.

Caged Freedom: Sometimes Freedom Doesn't Mean You're Free

I thought this video would assist me with driving home my point and serve as the perfect example of what I mean by Caged Freedom. I'm sure most of you are familiar with the 1994 movie The Shawshank Redemption starring Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, and James Whitmore. My primary focus is on Whitmore's character, Brooks Hatlen. An inmate who was sentenced to life in Shawshank in 1912. During his stay something strange happened to Brooks, he got used to his life of doing time. I dare to say that after so long, it didn't feel like he was doing time anymore. The place that was meant to punish him eventually began to feel like home. There, regardless of why he was convicted, he became somebody within the prison community. He felt respected like the neighborhood parson; appreciated like the grocer who lets you slide with a buck or two; the barber who gives you that fresh cut on the house from time to time; or that nice old man who always has a kind word to say who people in...
